Katherine Jenkins

KATHERINE JENKINS

World renowned classical singer Katherine Jenkins has established herself as one of the biggest names in music with her albums Premiere and Second Nature. She sang at the VE Day celebration in Trafalgar Square last May, and appeared at the Live8 concerts in both Berlin and London. When she walked onstage in Berlin, there were 250,000 people going right up to the Brandenburg Gate. They stretched so far she couldn't see where the crowd ended. When she sang an acapella version of Amazing Grace, the crowd went absolutely quiet. For this one spectacular evening at Balmoral Castle, Katherine is hoping to perform some songs with a Scottish connection.

THE ABERDEEN SINFONIETTA (Patron: Lady Grant of Monymusk)

Aberdeen Sinfonietta is just about to celebrate its 20th anniversary. For the first 10 years it existed as a small group of string players which played regularly in Aberdeen and toured throughout Scotland. Since then it has expanded considerably, by adding more strings, as well as woodwind, brass and percussion players, particularly to play in Aberdeen's top-class Music Hall as a small symphony orchestra. Many of the distinguished soloists who have performed with the Sinfonietta have Scottish connections: Neil Mackie, John Wallace, Moray Welsh, and more recently the violinist Lorraine McAslan. Bringing together many of the best professional, semi-professional and amateur players in the north-east, Aberdeen Sinfonietta prides itself on the flexibility of its makeup, and consequently the wide range of its repertoire, including contemporary works by Scottish composers such as John McLeod. It has established itself as one of the foremost contributors to music-making in the north-east, working with prominent choral societies in and around Aberdeen, as well as giving its regular Music Hall concert series.
